Ukrainian political leader and former world boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko was attacked by demonstrators during protests in the capital Kiev on Sunday, one of whom sprayed a fire extinguisher in his face. Immediately before these pictures were taken by journalist Andrew Sherepenko, Klitschko, a a leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform and prospective presidential candidate, called on the crowd to stop what he called 'provocation' of police and vandalism.

Protesters wearing helmets, wielding sticks and flares clashed with security forces surrounding government buildings in hand-to-hand battles. According to police, activists also threw smoke grenades and set vehicles alight. Protesters were seen building a metal barrier close to the police cordon late Sunday evening.

Opposition figures called the most aggressive protesters 'provocateurs' and urged them to stop. However, protesters did not back off and continued to shower fireworks and other objects on riot police, who protected themselves with shields. As flash and smoke grenades continued to be set off, ambulances were seen arriving to treat the injured.
